Green Connections: A Network for Future is an Erasmus+ training course focused on youth engagement and mobilization for climate action and nature protection and for cooperation in future green projects.
The training is meant to share our experience and successful tools to other European youth workers, making them able to emulate the youth involvement projects we developed in our town in their own communities. To teach green skills and the basics of ecology, climate action and nature restoration to youth workers capable of engaging new youth in their environmental actions.
During 7 days, youth workers from countries all around Europe joined in the town of Chaves, in the northern hill region of Portugal, a rural and isolated area of the country well known for its pristine and natural environment.
With a participatory, learn by doing approach, the training explored ways to mobilize young people into action, develop common intervention ideas and gather ecology knowledge. With the leadership of the local team of trainers, participants shared methods, practices, experiences, and the reality of their countries and communities.
They learned what Inspira! does in the town, built tools for civic engagement, community development and environmental education, and developed ideas for future cooperation and for the development of a green network capable of uniting the youth efforts and create an impact at the local and international level.

"The aim of the Green Connections Erasmus+ training was to engage young people in climate and nature protection actions, while also providing an opportunity for civil society organizations from different countries to build connections.
Already on the evening of the arrival day, during the icebreaker games and pleasant conversations over dinner, it was possible to feel the positive atmosphere and commitment that remained throughout the entire project. On the morning of the first day, we had the chance to get to know the other participants better through introductory activities. Afterwards, everyone had to reflect on their current knowledge and share the areas in which they would still like to improve. After lunch, we were guided around the charming city of Chaves, where we became acquainted with a small part of Portuguese culture and history.
On the second day, we had the opportunity to present our organizations and initiate possible future cooperation with others. Afterwards, working in teams, we presented the problems and areas for action in our own countries and communities. In the afternoon, we worked together to find good practices and solutions to these issues. We also received a lot of support in identifying who could help us during the process of finding solutions. We learned about the steps and actions needed to move from identifying a problem to implementing a solution, as well as the importance of raising awareness — because when we do so, we may realize that we are not as alone as we initially thought.
On the third day, we explored the natural environment and environmental challenges of Chaves. We learned about local native species, the spread of invasive species, and illegal dumping sites in the area. The use of non-formal methods, active learning, the support of local young people, and constructive teamwork made the learning process easier and more engaging. We were also able to actively participate in the solution process, as we were taken to several illegal dumping sites where we helped clean up the waste.
It was shocking to see piles of garbage in the middle of beautiful forests, near lakes and streams. During our stay, we were also involved in the organization’s awareness-raising “trash museum” initiative. The following day, we received a detailed introduction to Erasmus+ funding opportunities and different types of projects. Afterwards, divided into groups, we had to come up with our own project plans in detail. We had to design the topic, activities, methods, location, and every other aspect of the project, since on the final day we had to present our ideas in front of a very strict evaluation committee. After developing the project details, we worked on our presentations until we were finally able to showcase the results of our work. Once all projects had been evaluated, we concluded the training by reflecting together on what we had learned and by giving feedback on the organizers’ excellent and dedicated work.
I can confidently say that on the morning of the 28th, every participant left Chaves enriched with unforgettable experiences and new knowledge. Not only did we build an amazing community through the team-building activities, but many friendships were also formed. At the same time, we gained valuable knowledge for the future about climate education and practices suitable for involving local communities. Naturally, we also developed ourselves in many ways — improving our language and social skills, cultural and European awareness, teamwork, and organizational abilities."
