Supporting people with limb differences in summer camps and exploring the history and culture of Budapest
During my ESC volunteering project, I spent two months in Budapest at “A Végtaghiányos Gyermekekért Alapítvány”. As part of the project, I helped with different tasks supporting the work of the foundation, but my main task was volunteering at two camps: a family camp and a summer camp organized for children and their siblings. During this time, I learned a lot.
One of the most important parts of this experience was definitely the people I met. Working with people with limb differences showed me that a physical disability does not define someone’s life. I met amazing people who taught me a lot about independence, positivity, and seeing things from a different perspective.
Of course, this experience also had its challenges. Living on my own was not always easy. Even though I am Hungarian and Budapest was not completely unfamiliar to me, there were still moments when I felt lonely or unsure. Slowly, I learned how to handle these situations, trust myself more, and accept that it is okay not to be perfect.
During my time in Budapest, I also realized that history and culture are not just things I enjoy, they are something I truly love and want to keep exploring in the future.
My favourite memories are probably from the camps. The first days, seeing the kids arrive, all the games, funny moments, and conversations are things I will never forget. And of course, watching the sunrise from Fisherman’s Bastion was a breathtaking experience. Looking back, I feel grateful for this experience. I got to know amazing people, discovered new sides of myself, and I will always remember the time I spent in Budapest.
Foundation for Children with Limb Differences aims to help children with limb differences: to develop physically and mentally, to become healthy, happy, and confident adults. The foundation believes that they give courage and support to the children. They can gain more self-confidence among their peers so they can assert themselves more confidently in their micro-community. They can live a full, healthy and valuable life without limbs.
