Reflection on My ESC Volunteering Journey in Plasencia
Looking back at the experience I began exactly one year ago in Plasencia, Extremadura, as part of a European Solidarity Corps (ESC) volunteering project, I find myself feeling emotional and in a moment to be reflective. Spending ten months working with people with disabilities in Spain was one of my most powerful journey of personal growth, cultural immersion, and learning not just about others, but about myself.
From the moment I arrived, the locals in Plasencia welcomed me with open arms. I was placed in a day center (centro ocupacional) that provided support, therapies, and occupational activities for individuals with disabilities and diverse needs. My daily tasks ranged from helping with creative art and DIY projects to assisting with mobility and simply sharing conversations. Every small interaction held so much meaning and I quickly realized that my presence was just as valued as the practical support I provided.
Beyond the daily tasks, it was the little moments that also shaped me such as sharing coffee with other volunteers in the plaza mayor, exploring the natural areas on weekends, and learning a new language through patience (especially since English wasn't widely spoken in the region).
During the summer, I participated in a summer campamento (camp) for the individuals I had been working with and it turned out to be one of the most transformative and joyful chapters of my entire project.
For the duration of the camp, I lived with other volunteers from all across Spain, all of whom were native Spanish speakers. Being fully immersed in the language every single day pushed me far out of my comfort zone, but it also became a space where I felt really connected. I learned to navigate in fast-paced conversations, share complex ideas and build deep friendships which were rooted in the cultural exchange. These months didn't just deepen my ties with the people I worked alongside, they gave me a profound appreciation for Spanish culture and the power of community.
During my time volunteering I took the initiative to introduce daily sports sessions for the disabled people. Many of them spent a large part of the day in chairs, so we designed gentle movement routines, starting with stretching from head to toe. These sessions gave them a chance to engage their bodies, improve circulation and feel a sense of empowerment. Alongside these daily stretches, I also participated with them in fun, accessible sports whether it was golf tournaments, adapted soccer games or physiotherapy sessions.
This experience also gave me the opportunity to discover Spain in a way that few tourists ever get to.
During my ten months in Extremadura, I traveled to different regions of the country, experiencing the diversity that exists within Spain's borders. Each place had its own unique traditions, gastronomy, dialects and way of life, making every journey a brand-new learning experience.
I had the chance to try regional specialties and take part in some of Spain’s most important cultural celebrations. From the solemn, breathtaking processions of Semana Santa to the vibrant, energetic atmosphere of local ferias and the magical, fire-lit night of Noche de San Juan, I witnessed traditions passed down through generations.
Traveling throughout the country was so much more than only sightseeing; it was an opportunity to connect with locals, listen their stories and gain a deeper knowledge of the history, values and regional identities that make Spain a unique and fascinating place.
This experience did so much more than just shape my professional skills, as it gave me a renewed sense of purpose and a truly global perspective. To anyone considering volunteering with the European Solidarity Corps, I can only say this: it is a gift you give to yourself just as much as to the people you serve. The connections I made in Plasencia will stay with me forever, and the lessons I learned continue to shape the person I am today.
