My international volunteering journey started with a spark of curiosity and a desire to see something of the world. That's why I looked for volunteering opportunities abroad and found the long-term project of the French Solidarites Jeunesses network.
I spent my volunteering in a small French village, Laguépie, 100 km from Toulouse. I was joined by 3 other volunteers and together we prepared to face the challenges ahead. Initially, our responsibilities included the maintenance of the farmhouse, which we did under the guidance of our technical manager. We also had the challenge of organising our community life, cooking and shopping together, and of course a lot of cleaning.
Workcamps are such international volunteer programmes, that bring together people from different backgrounds to work on projects that address different social and environmental challenges. These projects can range from building schools and community centres to restoring ecosystems and promoting sustainable development.
My first workcamp was an intense experience. We had a group of young people from all over the world with whom we built an outdoor toilet from recycled pallets. Although it was a bit of an unusual goal, by the end of the work we had created a strong team. Knowing that we had helped our community was inspiring.
One of the most rewarding aspects of participating in a workcamp is the opportunity to interact with people from different cultures. Sharing meals, working together on projects, and simply spending time together allows us to build deep bonds and learn about each other's perspectives. While volunteering abroad, I got to meet so many interesting people who have unwittingly become a crucial part of my life.
In addition to the personal benefits, workcamps are a valuable opportunity to learn about global issues and develop intercultural communication skills. By working on projects that addressed pressing challenges, I gained a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of our world and the importance of sustainable development.
I've been reflecting a lot on the power of human connections and the positive impact individuals can have on their communities and the world. Whether you are looking to make a difference, broaden your horizons or simply embark on a new adventure, I encourage you to consider volunteering abroad and explore the world's possibilities!
